What is a Define Map?

A Define map requires students to analyse ideas to determine the content of the topic.

How to use a Define Map

The main topic or idea to be defined is placed
in the middle of the map. Students brainstorm
pictures, words or phrases that are relevant to
the topic word or idea. Pictures, words or phrases that are not related to the topic word or idea are placed in the not relevant area of the map. Teachers are able to scaffold the process through questioning.

Why use a Define Map?

Using a Define map provides a word bank and content for learners that can be further developed in the Inquiry process. It gives individuals the opportunity to share knowledge words about a topic and add those words to a class Define Map. As new ideas are introduced in the middle of the map, students are able to move non relevant words to the outside of the map and add new words to the relevant area of the map.

Relational: War is when two/a lot of countries fight. Countries try to control land like when Germany started to take France. Hitler was the one who started the war which is when a General starts war.

Multistructural: War is a battle to conquer another country. When an army loses a war they either all die or they retreat. A Commander or General leads the army.

Unistructural: War is people fighting to protect their land/country.
